Thomas Vermaelen (left), Mikel Arteta (centre) and Kieran Gibbs after Swansea's late equaliser
Thomas Vermaelen used to be the man every Arsenal supporter desperately wanted to see on the team-sheet. But news that Vermaelen will be required for at least the next fortnight due to an injury to Laurent Koscielny has been treated with a certain amount of trepidation among Emirates regulars.
Vermaelen may be club captain and write a perfectly nice column in the matchday programme, but it is a long time since he did his talking on the pitch.
Garry Monk, Swansea City’s caretaker manager, clearly sniffed blood as he started with both Wilfried Bony and Michu up front at the Emirates.
Bony is roughly an inch shorter than Vermaelen, but the Ivory Coast striker managed to jump higher than the Belgian to meet Neil Taylor’s 11th minute cross and plant a header past Wojciech Szczesny.
Vermaelen could legitimately claim that more should have been done to stop Taylor’s cross, but the 28-year-old should have taken control of the situation and made it impossible for Bony to score his 20th goal of the season.
